This memorial, erected on 30 May 1945, stands on the spot where Franklin Sousley, Harlon Block, Michael Strank, John Bradley, Rene Gagnon and Ira Hayes raised the American flag on 23 February 1945. The memorial commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of the US marines during the Battle of Iwo Jima (19.2.1945 - 26.3.1945). A small memorial stone is dedicated to John H. Bradley, one of the flag raisers on Mount Suribachi.
