Crash Site Avro Lancaster Mk III ED864/G AJ-B

Hungerweg, 46325, Borken
Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany

This memorial was unveiled in 2005 on the spot where a Lancaster of the RAF's 617th Squadron "Dambuster" crashed on 16 May 1943. The Lancaster was part of a bombing mission aimed at destroying the Ruhr Dams. It flew into the top of a high voltage pylon here and the Upkeep mine aboard the aircraft detonated approximately ninety seconds later, sending shockwaves that shattered windows across the surrounding area. These high voltage pylons are still there. With your back to the monument, at 02:00 you will see the ill-fated mast that decided the death of 7 young heroes. The men were initially buried in the Borken town cemetery and later reburied at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
