On this location, a British bomber crashed on 16 July 1941. The pilot aimed on this spot so that the crash would not destroy houses and kill people on the ground. Text on the Memorial: [i]IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE R.A.F. WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE FREEDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS[/i] The Blenheim IV-V6267 of the 18 Sqdn RAF took part in an operation to destroy targets in the port of Rotterdam. At around 5:00 PM, the bomber was hit by a FLAK. The pilot sent his plane into the water of the Noordsingel. The crew members: THOMAS NOEL PARTRIDGE, Wing Commander GEORGE ARTHUR DVORJETZ, Sergeant JOHN OSCAR NOEL SMITH, Flight Sergeant were killed. They are buried in the British plot of Crooswijk in Rotterdam.
