German Bunker Malancourt / Monument 69e R.I. & 79th US Infantry Division

D18, Malancourt
Grand-Est, France

This German pillbox was destroyed by the French army in 1919. The German fortifications around Malancourt killed many French (and American) soldiers. The bunker is currently a memorial in memory of the French units who participated in the liberation of Malancourt. The memorial on top of the bunker commemorates 6 companies of the 69e R.I. which completely disappeared between 30 March and 5 April 1916. It also commemorates the soldiers of the 79th US Infantry Division who were killed on this location in September 1918.
