Fort Pannerden

Fort Pannerden was built from 1869 to 1872 and was modernised between 1885 and 1890 with two armoured batteries. In 1914-1918, the fort was mobilized. The fort received the status of infantry strongpoint in 1939 and its heaviest armament was replaced by two 7,5cm marine guns. There were also seven casemates built around the fort. It was surrounded by armoured vehicles and attacked by airplanes during the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. The Dutch garrison surrendered on 11 May 1940.
