Montelupich Prison Cracow
Montelupich 7, Kraków
Lesser Poland, Poland
This prison was operated by the Gestapo from 1940 to 1944. In this period, some 50,000 prisoners were held (mainly Poles and Jews). It was a place of mass execution and many prisoners were tortured before being deportated to the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Bireknau and Plaszow. After the liberation of Cracow in 1945, the NKVD manned this prison. Forty prisoners were executed here for crimes against humankind because of what they did back in Auschwitz-Birkenau. The prison is still being operated these days.
