Fortified Position of Liège - Fort de Chaudfontaine

This fort is constructed between 1881 and 1884 as part of Fortified Position of Liège and modernised in the '30s. There were fights for the fort in 1914 as well as in 1940. During the fights of 1914, 71 Belgian soldiers were killed. On 17 May 1940, it was bombarded by the Luftwaffe and assaulted by German ground troops. The Belgian garrison lost several men during this attack. At 17.30 the fort surrendered. The fort had two observation posts, [towid]147895, bunker CF 4 at Romsée[/towid] and [towid]147255, bunker Mg 1 at Magnée[/towid]. This fort cannot be visited
