On May 11, 1940, at approximately 2:00 a.m., the command post of the 1st Company, 3rd Battalion, 44th Infantry Regiment was established in this farmhouse. Its commander was Captain H. Turkstra. The command post of 1-III-44 R.I. was initially located in Echteld at the "De Hul" farm. During the night of May 10–11, 1940, Captain Turkstra had been ordered to move his unit from Echteld, the "East Front," towards Ijzendoorn. He was to take over the "Southern Front" positions of the Betuwe Line. On May 13, 1940, at approximately 8:00 PM, Captain Turkstra received the order to withdraw to the Dutch Waterline near Everdingen.
