Sir David Stirling / SAS Memorial

Lieutenant Colonel Sir Archibald David Stirling was the founder of Special Air Service (SAS) during WW2. He was captured in January 1943 made several attempts to escape the prison camps he was held in. Stirling was knighted in 1989. The memorial consists of a bronze statue of Colonel Sir David Stirling, poised atop a rock. It was unveiled in 2002. A central plaque bears the inscription: [i]"In remembrance of all those members of the Special Air Service Regiment who have died in the service of their country and have given their lives to uphold the principles of freedom and justice"[/i] Surrounding plaques honor the fallen, etched with the names of SAS Regiment members who lost their lives in service.
