The Amstel Hotel opened in 1867. During World War I, the hotel served as the Commander's Office and Military Central Post (until 6 July 1915) for the Defence Line of Amsterdam. During World War II, the hotel served as the headquarters of the German army. Approximately 60% of the rooms were used to billet German officers. A special canteen for German soldiers was also established. Heinrich Himmler visited the hotel for lunch in May 1942.
