In the Cloisters of Westminster Abbey are numerous memorials Remember THE OLD CONTEMPTIBLES The British Expeditionary Force which served in Flanders within range of the enemy mobile artillery between 5 August and 22 November 1914 At the First Battle of Ypres their stand against a force of ten times their number prevented the German advance against the Channel Ports -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ian Fraser Baron Fraser of Lonsdale C.H. C.B.E. 1897-1974 Blinded in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, for half a century he served his country in both Houses of Parl- iament championed the cause of ex-servicemen and women and inspired the blind of many nations by his leadership as Chairman of St. Dunstans" ( Originally called the Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Care Committee in 1915, it became St Dunstan's and is now known as Blind Veterans UK) -------------------------------------------------- "Special Operation Executive In memory of the members of all nationalities of S.O.E. who sustained the spirit of resistance and gave their lives for the liberation of the occupied countries 1940-1945." ---------------------------------------------------------- "G.C.H.Q. Recognising service at home and abroad Protecting the United Kingdom since 1909" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Coastal Command Memorial was unveiled on March 16th, 2004 in the Southern Cloister of Westminster Abbey at the 60th Anniversary of the Battle for the Atlantic. It comemmorates the efforts of Coastal Command, since its institution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A memorial within Westminster Abbey commemorates the soldiers of the Queen's Westminster Volunteers who gave their lives in the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).
