Audie Murphy received the Medal of Honor for his actions here on January 26th, 1945. As the memorial depicts, the 19-year-old soldier jumped on a burning M10 Tank Destroyer and held off a company of Germans for an hour with the .50 calibre machine gun. He then led a counter-attack against the Germans. After the war, Murphy became a movie star and played himself in the movie, "To Hell and Back."
