Memorial Tirpitz

Near the coast behind this memorial, the German battleship Tirpitz was sunk by R.A.F. Avro Lancaster bombers, on 12 November 1944. Of the 1700 crewmembers, about 1000 died. The R.A.F. used Tallboy bombs and there are still some craters visible. After the war, the Tirpitz was scrapped, but the bow is still present, just like the ponton used for the scrapping. Sometimes pieces of metal of the Tirpitz washed ashore. The memorial is also made of metal of the Tirpitz. Near the wreck of the Tirpitz are various Tallboy bombcraters visible. Next to the monument is a supply bunker for the Tirpitz.
