The Asnelles Memorial at Gold Beach honors the British units who liberated their town. The text on the middle plaque is: A Ses Glorieux LIBERATEURS La Commune d'Asnelles le Hamel RECONNAISSANTE 6 Juin 1944 Translation: For their glorious liberation, the commune d'Asnelles le Hamel is grateful June 6 1944 The left side (English) reads: 2 HD BH Devonshire Regiment JST BH Royal Hampshire Regiment JST BH Dorsetshire Regiment 231 Infantry Brigade under Command of Brigadier Sir Alexander Stanier BG. D.S.O. M.C. of 50 Northumbrian Division supported by other units of the British Liberation Army were the first troop to land at Asnelles and le Hamel at 730 hours on D Day 6th June 1944 From here they started on their victorious advance to free many towns and villages in France Belgium and Holland and were the first British Infantry to enter Germany
