Iwo Jima Memorial Arlington
US Marine Memorial Circle, Arlington
Virginia, United States of America

The Iwo Jima Memorial, official name Marine Corps War Memorial, is dedicated to all personnel of the United States Marine Corps who have died in the defense of the United States of America since 1775. The design of the sculpture was based on the famous photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. The flag was raised by Sgt Michael Strank, Cpl Harlon Block, PFC Franklin Sousley, PFC Rene Gagnon, PFC Ira Hayes and PM2 John Bradley. Within one month after taking the picture, three of the soldiers were killed.
