Bench Evacuees of Amersfoort May 1940 Bergen

Evacuees of Amersfoort in Bergen. The Netherlands had been preparing since 1935 for a possible war with Germany with plans for evacuation of civilians who could be at risk. When the invasion of Germany in may 1940 the people of Amersfoort were these plans evacuated to North Holland. Some of them came in Bergen and Bergen aan Zee visit. As thanks for this shelter the residents of Amersfoort donated in 1941 a bench around the tree at the beginning of the Hoflaan. The bench was made by the carpentry factory ''De Vlijt'', located at the Hellestraat at the time. Owners were Vonkeman and Vredeling (father of the later minister).
