Kieffer Commandos Monument

N°4 Commando street, Ouistreham

In a beautiful coastside park lies this monument for the No.4 commandos of Lt. Kieffer, who came to shore in the early morning hours of 6 June 1944 to make the batteries of Ouistreham harmless. The monument is placed on a German 644 bunker which was part of Stützpunkt 08 HKB Riva Bella. The purpose of the Stützpunkt with 6 pieces of 155mm artillery was to cover the entrance of the river Orne and the canal. The Regelbau 644 is a "Stand mit 6-Schartenturm in A". The stones in front of the monument bear the names of the French commando's who where killed on June 6, 1944.
