Naval Memorial Laboe

The world-famous naval memorial of the Baltic seaside resort Laboe was built in the years 1927-1936. Adolf Hitler was present at the unveiling. It is at the same time a memorial to people of all nations who died at sea and a memorial to peaceful shipping. The memorial has an 85 metre high tower, which visitors can climb up inside. It is situated close to the locks of Kiel Canal but on the opposite Eastern shore of the "Kieler Förde" (Kiel Firth). The ship bell of the scrapped heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper was given to the memorial by the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich after the war.
