Memorial and Grave Victims Englandspiel



Two plaques in the courtyard of the detainee building of Mauthausen Concentration Camp indicate the place where the ashes are buried of 40 Dutch and 7 British secret agents, mostly arrested during the Englandspiel, who were murdered in the camp on 6 and 7 September 71944. Their ashes were secretly buried by other prisoners. Text on the plaque: [i]ON THE 6TH AND 7TH SEPTEMBER 1944 40 DUTCH AND 7 BRITISH SPECIAL AGENTS WHO HAD BEEN DROPPED ABOVE GERMAN OCCUPIED TERRITORY CRUELLY WERE PUT TO DEATH IN THIS CAMP BY THE NAZIS THEIR BODIES WERE BURNED IN THE CREMATORIUM AT THE RISK OF THEIR LIVES YUGOSLAV AND RUSSIAN PRISONERS BURIED THE ASHES OF THESE WAR-HEROES AT THIS PLACE NETHERLANDS WAR GRAVES FOUNDATION.[/i] The other plaque contains the names of the victims.
