The text on the plaque is: [i]BRIDGE BETWEEN FEAR AND HOPE Hunger winter 1944 - 1945 (21 December 2005)[/i] The old bridge over the IJssel was badly damaged twice during the Second World War. The first time in 1940 by Dutch soldiers to stop the German invasion. The second time in 1945 by the Germans to cover their retreat against the Allied Forces.
