North Holland, Netherlands, the

The " Forteiland Pampus (Fort Island Pampus)" was built in 1887-1895 as part of the Stelling van Amsterdam (Defence Line of Amsterdam, which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site). The fort was mobilized in 1914-1918. In World War II, the Germans removed all the metal and used the island as target practice for dive bombers. During the Hunger-Winter 1944-1945, people could walk over the ice to the island and they removed all the wood for fuel purposes. Nowadays the fort can be visited.
