Odderøya Fort

Kristiansand
Vest-Agder, Norway

Fort Odderøya (built 1667-1914) played a major role in the battle of Kristiansand on 9 April 1940. During this battle, Odderøya fired a total of 93 shells on the German invasion force. The fort was heavilly bombarded by naval fire and Stukas and exploded after taking a direct hit to its ammunition magazine. Odderøya defenders suffered 8 deaths and 13 wounded. The Germans dismantled the 21cm battery that same year to relocate the guns to better defensive forts nearby. The fort today: It is currently open to the public.
