Cemetery Victims Cap Arcona and Thielbeck
Am Kiebietzberg, Neustadt
Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
This cemetery was created on the beach of Neustadt. More than 7000 victims of the sunken ships Cap Arcona and Thielbeck are buried here. On 3 May 1945, the ships were sunk by Allied planes while they were packed with prisoners, mainly from the Neuengamme concentration camp. Very few prisoners survived this disaster. Until 1971, bones of victims were still being washed ashore.
