Memorial Polish and Candaian forces Coudehard

D242, Coudehard
Normandie, France

This memorial, written in Polish and French, commemorates the end of the battle of the Falaise pocket on august 22, 1944 and the heroism of the 1st Polish Armored Division and the 4th Canadian Armored Division. At the precise place where this memorial nowadays stands, German soldiers launched a powerful counter-attack with a single panther tank of the 2nd SS-PzK. As a result of the assault, in just a few minutes Poles lost as many as five Sherman tanks and sought refuge in the nearby woods.
