On 17 September 1944 Captain G. K. Sykes of 435 Squadron 479 Fighter Group USAAF made a patrol flight over The Netherlands. He was based at Wattisham in England. Near Ede his aircraft was hit by FLAK. His Mustang started to lose fuel in large quantities. Around 13:45 hrs Sykes made a forced landing near the Wolfsdijk between Ede and Veenendaal. He could escape unharmed. With help of the resistance he could join Operation Pegasus I on the 22nd of October. There's no memorial at the crash site.
