The aircraft received damage from Flak. The crew consisted of: Wing Commander Peter Davis, DSO, pilot Flight Lieutenant ‘Bobby’ Lovegrove, 2nd pilot Flight Lieutenant Fred Mason, navigator Sergeant Jack Auld, flight engineer Flight Lieutenant Jack Francis, wireless operator Flight Lieutenant Bob Chalk, rear gunner Driver Richard Ashton, air despatcher Driver Showell, Air despatcher Additional passenger RAF Flight Lieutenant Cecil Wingfield a ‘boffin’ from RAF Boscombe Down AA&&EE who went along to ‘test some secret equipment’. After the dropping the Pilot gave order to bail out. Auld, Francis , Showell, Chalk, Wingfield and Lovegrove bailed out quickly. Lovegrove landed on the roof of restaurant ‘Rust Wat’. He managed to escape. Hij crossed the Rhine on 22 october with Operation Pegasus. Wingfield’s parachute failed to open. His body was found 600 meters from the crash location. Auld, Francis, Showell and Chalk became POW’s. Davis, Mason and Ashton perished when the aircraft the crashed aroud 16:45 hrs local time in the woods opposite restaurant ‘Rust Wat’ at the Kemperbergerweg at Schaarsbergen.
