Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Stadium was built from 1934 to 1936 for the 1936 Summer Olympics. During the Second World War, the catacombs of the stadium were in use as a factory for detonators and the stadium was also in use for the air defense. In 1945, the stadium was the site of heavy fighting. After the war this battle became an important propaganda subject as it was told that thousands of soldiers (of whom many Hitlerjugend) died in an epic struggle for the stadium. However, research has shown that about 70 German soldiers and an unknown number of Soviets were killed during this battle. The stadium remained largely intact during the Battle of Berlin.
