The Memorial to the former House of Detention in Amsterdam recalls that during World War II the building was used by the Security Service and Gestapo as a prison for political prisoners. Text on the monument: [i]THIS BUILDING, THE FORMER HOUSE OF DETENTION, WAS USED BY THE SD AND GESTAPO FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS DURING THE GERMAN OCCUPATION. FOR MANY, THIS WAS THE FIRST STATION ON THE ROAD TO CONCENTRATION CAMPS, GERMAN PRISONS, AND PLACES WHERE THOSE WHO RESISTED THE OCCUPIER WERE EXECUTED. IN 1944, TWO RAIDS WERE COMMITTED ON THIS BUILDING IN AN ATTEMPT TO liberate them. THE FIRST RAID WAS LEADED BY GERRIT JAN VAN DER VEEN. THE SECOND WAS LED BY JOHANNES POST.[/i]
