Commonwealth War Graves Chercq

The British Expeditionary Force was involved in the later stages of the defence of Belgium following the German invasion in May 1940 and suffered many casualties in covering the withdrawal to Dunkirk. The 24 Commonwealth casualties of the Second World War buried at Chercq Churchyard died in the defence of the line of the Scheldt during the few days following 19 May 1940. Two of them are unidentified. The churchyard also contains six burials of the First World War.
