On 18 September 1944, about 0600, the 506th Regiment Paratroopers, part of the 101st Airborne Division, marched into Eindhoven. When the 3rd Batallion reached Vlokhoven, Captain John W. Kiley was fatally shot by a German sniper. It was unknown where the sniper hided, but in a reaction, the church tower of the "Onze Lieve Vrouw van Lourdeskerk" was heavily bombarded by gunfire. The bullet impacts have recently largely been restored, which has made the proof of history gone missing.
