Former Geschäftszentrale der Dresdner Bank Berlin
Französische Straße 38, Berlin
Berlin, Germany
This building complex was built from 1887 to 1889 and damaged in November 1943, during the night of 28-29 January 1944 and on 3 February 1945 by Allied aerial bombardment. During the battle of Berlin in April 1945, many citizens sought refuge in the building. It had already been confiscated by the Wehrmacht for use as a base for antiaircraft guns. The Red Army fired large calibre artillery on the Geschäftszentrale der Dresdner Bank to take out these German positions. It currently goes under the name "Hotel de Rome". (translation by Dan Reid)
