Memorial General Theodore Roosevelt

General Theodore Roosevelt, who was the first to set foot on Utah Beach on the morning of June 6, 1944, arrived in Méautis around June 15, while the battle in Donville was raging. This photo was taken shortly before his death in a house in Méaulis. He collapsed from a heart attack on July 13, 1944, in an apple orchard near the Méautis presbytery, while returning from a battle against a German counterattack. He was first buried in the temporary American cemetery at Carquebut, before being transferred to the [towid]38,Normandy American Cemetery[/towid].
