Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was founded in 1849. Dirk Hannema was the director of the museum from 1921 to 1945. Hannema collaborated during the German occupation and was appointed by Mussert as Authorized Representative of the Leader for Museum Affairs in 1943. The cellar of the museum was used to secure valuable museum objects in May 1940. The museum survived the bombing and reopened on 22 May 1940. During the German occupation, the museum was open to the public and attracted approximately 50,000 visitors per war year. Under the leadership of Hannema, four National Socialist exhibitions were held here during the occupation. In 2022, Boijmans made the news because it returned Jewish art stolen during the war.
