This memorial commemorates the people who died in the bombing of the heavy water plant in Vemonk on November 16, 1943. On November 16, 1943, 143 American bombers bombed the heavy water plant in Vemonk. The factory made heavy water, this water would be used by the Germans to make an atomic bomb. During the bombing, 711 bombs were dropped. The plant was damaged, due to the continuing attacks on the factory the production was moved to Germany.
