Memorial Bamberger Family Leipzig
Grimmaische Straße 30, 04109, Leipzig
Sachsen, Germany

This memorial stone commemorates the Jewish Bamberger family and their men's fashion store Bamberger & Hertz, which was established here and set on fire by the Nazis during Kristallnacht on 9/10 November 1938. This shop in the so-called Königsbau on the corner of Grimmaische Straße and Goethestraße was one of many branches of Bamberger & Hertz. Immediately after Hitler came to power, the shops were boycotted and vandalised by members of the SA. After the building was set on fire in 1938, it was expropriated and sold. Most of the family did not survive the camps. The Königsbau was returned to the family's descendants in 1990.
