Commonwealth War Graves Chauffourt

On the cemetery in Chauffourt are three Commonwealth war graves. These are the graves of Sgt J.P.Keenan, Sgt J.A.Moffat en Sgt H.T.Peebles. On April 26, 1944 at 21:30 departed from the airbase Metheringham, the Lancaster ND850 with the mission: a raid over the city of Schweinfurt in Germany. The aircraft was hit by enemy fire from a Messerschmitt fighter and crashed down burning in Chauffourt. In the crash, three crew members got killed, they are buried at this cemetery. The remaining four crew members landed safely by parachute and they took hiding in order to stay out of the hands of the Germans.
