On Friday March 22, 1940 at approximately 12:00 noon Spitfire PR IB N3069 crashed near Herwen. The pilot, Flying Officer Claude Mervyn Wheatley, was killed. The Spitfire in which Mervyn Wheatley flew was one of the first photo reconnaissance aircraft. Sander Woonings has been trying to trace the history of this crash for many years. He ensured that a [towid]129740[/towid] memorial was placed at the crash site in 2020. At the end of 2024, he was able to open a museum in Doetinchem that tells the story of the founding of the RAF's Photo Reconnaissance Unit, the life of Mervyn Wheatley and the crash.
