Memorial Rhine Crossing Patton's Bridge Builders

Nearby, at Oppenheim, on 22 March 1945 around 10 pm, the first troops of the 5th US Infantry Division crossed the Rhine and established a bridgehead on the east side of the river. The next day, troops of the 249th Engineer Battalion built a pontoon bridge here and the after the bridge at Remagen, the 2nd crossing of the Rhine was a fact. That day, Patton himself made the crossing on foot.
