Former RAF Airfield Reykjavik

In 1940, following the British occupation of Iceland, Reykjavik's grass strip was transformed into a Class A airfield with 3 intersecting concrete runways. The RAF then operated from this airfield throughout the war and on 6 July 1946 it was gifted it to the city of Reykjavik. Squadron operating 53 Sqdn Consolidated Liberators 1944-1945 86 Sqdn Consolidated Liberators 1944 120 Sqdn Consolidated Liberators 1943-1944 190 Sqdn Consolidated PBY Catalina 1943 204 Sqdn Short Sunderlands 1941 209 Sqdn Consolidated PBY Catalina 1941 210 Sqdn Short Sunderland 1940-1942 220 Sqdn Boeing Fortress 1942-1943 221 Sqdn Vickers Wellington 1941 251 Sqdn Lockheed Ventura 1941-1945 269 Sqdn Lockheed Hudson 1943-1944 279 Sqdn Hawker Hurricane 1945 280 Sqdn Vickers Warwick 1945-1946 330 Sqdn Northrop N-3PB Catalina 1943 612 Sqdn Armstrong Whitworth Whitley 1941-1942 Flying boats operated out of nearby Skerjafjorou. There are remains of bunkers, fuelling facilities and other buildings in the area of the airfield.
