Esquelbecq Castle

This castle was established in 1918 as a Casualty clearing station for Canadians and Australian soldiers. On May 28, 1940, the castle was damaged by a high-caliber shell. Between 1940 and 1944 the castle was occupied by the German army: On 28 May 1940: Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. This regiment murdered several dozen British prisoners at "la plaine au bois" in Esquelbecq. 1940-1941: Otlazareth Until 5 September 1944: A kommandantur.
