Memorial "Weapon Container in the Bog" Aldeboarn

Rijksstraatweg, Aldeboarn
Friesland, Netherlands, the

Near the Heafeartsbrêge (Hooivaartsbrug) stands a monument commemorating the arms drop that took place here on 5 January 1945. The monument is formed by a concrete block from which 2 stenguns and a weapons container protrude. On 5 January 1945, a Halifax bomber dropped eighteen arms containers on the Wardrobe dropping field in De Deelen between Tijnje and Aldeboarn. Because the coordinates given were incorrect, the resistance group of Douwe Algra, a teacher in Tijnje, had waited in vain for an arms drop three times before . The 20 resistance fighters managed to recover the weapons and distribute them across Friesland. The memorial was unveiled on 5 May 2024 by some relatives of Douwe Algra and is named ‘Weapon Containers in the Bog’.
