From 1941 to 1943 the gravel pits around KL Auschwitz served as a place of murderous work for prisoners, in particular Poles and Jews, assigned tot he penal company. Initially, groups of prisoners, hostages, and Soviet prisoners of war were executed in the gravel pit area.
