Aliceville POW Camp

This camp was built at the end of 1942 and held about 600 prisoners of war. It was one of the largest POW camps in the Southeastern United States. The prisoners, most of them from Rommel's Afrika Korps, were kept in 6 different segregated enclosures. The land and camp buildings were auctioned to the city and private individuals after the war. A memorial panel is standing on the former camp grounds. An old stone chimney is the only surviving structure of the camp.
