By the bombings from the air and sea collapsed part of the cliff at Pointe du Hoc. Colonel James Rudder established in this bomb crater, on June 6th 1944, his headquarters to lead the 2nd Battalion Rangers to land during the assault on Pointe du Hoc. The crater lies under a half collapsed German bunker. Here he helped the troops in the afternoon of June 8. After two days of battle, of the 225 Rangers there were only 90 able to fight. 80 Rangers were killed. The former headquarters is located in the first bunker with a viewing point on the edge of the cliff.
