[b]Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (R.H.L.I.)[/b] Text on the plaque: On 16 September 1944, 550 soldiers of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (RHLI), 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, under command of Lieutenant Colonel Denis Withaker, DSO, advanced into Antwerp to prevent the enemy from destroying the port facilities. For the next three weeks the RHLI, supported by the Belgian Resistance under command of Colonel Eugène Colson, fought a number of actions to secure the harbour’s vital equipment. Accompanied by the Resistance, the Canadians then began the advance to Woensdrecht and Zuid-Beveland (the Netherlands) as part of the overall offensieve to free the approaches to Antwerp. On 28 November 1944, a Canadian supply ship became the first vessel to steam up the river Scheldt into Antwerp harbour, bringing the essential materials that contributed significantly to the allied victory. Of the almost 13,000 allied casualties in this campaign, 6,500 were Canadian. 4 September 1944 – 4 September 2004 [b]Kamina-Korea[/b] This memorial commemorates the Belgians who fought in Korea during the Korean conflict (1950-1953). The Belgian-Luxembourg battalion fought alongside the 3rd US Infantry Division. They went to Korea aboard the Kamina. [b]Belgian Para-Commandos[/b] Monument in honor of the Belgian paratroopers (1942-1992) and to the founders of the units in England, Commando Commandant Danbloy and S.A.S. Commander Blondeel. [b]US Army Anti Aircraft Units[/b] Memorial to the US Army anti aircraft units that protected Antwerp from V1 bombing during WW2. [b]Sea Captain Eugène "Harry" Colson[/b] Text on the plaque: To commemorate sea-captain Eugène Colson known as "Harry" 07-02-1913 22-01-2000 From 1941 on, he was the leader of a group resistance-fighters like the N.K.B. which contributed during September and October 1944 to the liberation of the port of Antwerp together with the Allies. 60 year-liberation of Antwerp 04-09-2004
