In Dongjum (municipality of Waadhoeke) is a memorial stone of Jan Schat on the cemetery. He was born on September 17, 1908 in St. Annaparochie. During the war, the Schat family hid a number of Jews and other people in hiding, but were betrayed. Jan Schat was arrested on April 14, 1944 and transferred to Leeuwarden prison. He was subsequently transferred to Buchenwald on 5 February 1945 via Groningen, Vught and Sachsenhausen, and died at the age of 37 during transport to Dachau / Flossenburg.
