Memorial Farming Estate "Mangelschots"
Hoekstraat, 3971, Heppen (Leopoldsburg)
Limburg, Belgium
The monument memorizes the fighting around the farming estate "Mangelschots". On September the 9th , 1944, Heppen was still being defended by the Germans. The position of the farming estate "Mangelschots" was still a German stronghold. At 08.45 AM the 4th Company of the Coldstream Guards launched another attack. Heavy fighting developed around the farm during which the Commanding Officer of the Company, Major William Cavendish (brother in law of J.F. Kennedy) was shot down while trying to enter the farmhouse. He has been buried on the British Military Cemetery in Leopoldsburg. Today the farmhouse is a country pub and carries a beautiful wall painting as a momentum.
