Ditch of Sadness Leopoldsburg

Martelarenstraat, 3970, Leopoldsburg
Limburg, Belgium

On December the 6th, 1944, the political prisoners that were locked up in the "Cavalry Camp of Beverlo" were released by their German captors. In a lunch café nearby, they enjoyed their meal together. A group of Flemish SS men and some German soldiers withdrawing from Antwerp, march in that direction and remove them from the building. They take them to this ditch and execute 22 innocent citizens. Some hours later Leopoldsburg is liberated by the Brigade Piron.
