During Operation Chastise, the Dambuster Raid, several Lancasters were lost. ED865 AJ-S, the aircraft of pilot P/O L.J. Burpee, crashed during the outbound flight at Gilze-Rijen airbase. The explosion of aircraft and Upkeep bomb caused a lot of damage. On the 4th of May 2018 this memorial was erected at the crash site. On top of the memorial a cranckshaft with 7 pistons of a Rolls Royce Merlin engine was placed. Every piston represents a crew member. The memorial is located on an active airbase. This location is not open to the public.
