Maginot Line - Ouvrage Four à Chaux

The Maginot Line's Four à Chaux fortress was a component of the [i]Secteur Fortifié des Vosges[/i]. The garrison consisted of 447 soldiers, 78 NCO's and 26 officers from the 165rd RIF (Fortress Infantry Regiment). After heavy bombing and shelling by Stuka's and artillery, Four à Chaux capitulated on 1 July 1940. Block 1 was destroyed by German soldiers in 1944. [b]The fort today:[/b] Four à Chaux is currently a museum. A plaque in memory of the defenders as well as the attackers, is near the entrance.
